Our practice has been running avimark for a couple years now. Lately our workstations
have been freezing up randomly all over the network. There were 2 changes that occurred
around the same time the freeze/excessively slow performance started: (1) Avimark
update. (2) New IDEXX IVLS & 8 port wired router along with Catalyst installed. Its a
complete lockup, alt/cntrl/del and end task avimark or shutdown/restart. we recently updated our server. so i find it hard to believe the server is inadequate, but i'm sure it is poss. any thoughts or suggestions on where to start?

Hi,

The first place to start is to try and find the cause or common factor in the freeze-ups. For example, does it happen more often at a certain time of day or exact time? Is it happening after the Idexx test is ran and the results are being imported? Is the lock up starting at the server and then workstations being affected or is it something noticed on one particular workstation then a few minutes later the rest of the computers? These are just a few things to check/keep note of, but hopefully, they will help you figure out where the problem is coming from. Also, do not be shy about calling into our technical support because they will be able to help you troubleshoot this as well.

Thank you for your response, i apologize as I have not been on to check post in some time. I will monitor to identify any occurrences that trigger the freeze. I do know for certain that it happens mainly in the lab where our idexx equipment is networked to the "problem workstation". The freeze ups seem to happen during a period of inactivity to me, but i will ask lab personnel to keep a record. For example today after logging into Avimark, i went about cleaning up in the lab (ie no pc activity on my part) went to work station and it was locked up, you can move mouse pointer but keyboard is non-functional unless strangely enough you alt/cntrl/del and end task. you cant alt/tab to another running program, you cant type into log-in box for avimark, as soon as you close avimark it's fine.

During the inactivity, do you have any power options set to Turn off Hard-disks, enter Standy, Hibernate, or turn off the network cards to save power? If you do, I would disable those settings on your workstations and server to see if that reduces or solves the issue.

If you are using Windows XP, there is an XP Settings document available at http://www.avimark.net/support/downloadable-documents with instructions for setting power management. If you are using a newer operating system, let me know, and I will see if I can get some instructions on setting the power management on that operating system.

Not sure if you fixed this...but I think your IDEXX set up is the culprit. Here's why: the IDEXX Catalyst machine is 'noisy' i.e. can really slow the network down with tons of extra traffic (according to IDEXX themselves). Also, our IDEXX rep who set the Catalyst up on the network had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what she was doing. I had to keep a really close eye and she nearly made some major mistakes.

Disconnect the Catalyst from the network, restart everything, and then see what happens.

You can email me at jeremyb@AVImark.net. You will likely get quicker support by emailing support@AVImark.net though with my other job duties often making my email and forum activity lag behind. Based on the information from some of your posts, it may need to be escalated to our software/hardware support technicians. If you could email me the clinic information, I can look over the history on the account to get a clear picture of everything that has already been looked into.

I am having a very similar issue at one of my client locations. Have you found any resolution? Their environment is;

Dell PowerEdge R510 (12 drive chassis) with server 2008 R2 running native (not a hyperV vm) - This server is an AD server, Print server and file server. It has the windows services necessary for those functions, but currently no AV or Firewall. The server is also fully patched.

A Dell PowerConnect 2824 switch

A Watchguard XTM21-W running Watchguard OS 11.3

They have a T1 data connection through Windstream/Nuvox

All desktops are on home runs with the exception of two which are connected to a Dell PowerConnect 2808

There is a Dymo USB label printer connected to a buffalo usb network print server

There is a HP LaserJet MFP M3035 setup on the network

They are running MPS with two workstations using a card scanner and signature pad (DESKTOP03-PC and DESKTOP04-PC)

All workstations are Dell Optiplex XE, and are running ESET AV but no Firewall. The Avimark UNC path is excluded from the ESET AV.

They are running Avimark 2010.4.1.13543 with DB Ver 2010.4 in client/server mode.

Any help or correlation between the setups would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
So, I figured out what the issue is. I built up a Virtual on the 2008 server. I moved Avimark/MPS to that server and the issues went away. Starting, we only had the file sharing role installed and the server on the domain. Then we started migrating all of the functions over to the virtual (to comply with Microsoft licensing). As soon as the AD role was turned on the issues returned. It appears there is some incompatibility with MPS/Avimark & Active Directory 2008 or greater. The incompatibility is likely caused with higher security implemented when the AD role is turned on. I will let everyone know when this has been resolved. Thanks.
