New to AviMark, but familiar with several other vet and people practice management software.

One of my clients uses Avimark and as they've rolled out Win 7 machines (and 1 Vista) they've had issues with random violation errors on all of those machines, and a couple lately on XP. The majority of the errors seem to be related to record locks and error 64.

We did upgrade the server and with AviMark support help got everything transferred this was maybe a month or so before they began rolling out a couple of new machines.

The occurance to them seems random, I've had them start collecting screenshots. They've talked to support about it and got some howto's back on sleep settings and disabling power save features (was already done). And the suggestion to run indexing again.

Samples of the messages:

(win7 and XP; the most frequent error) Unable to retrieve lock RecSize:117, RRN:2. Error code, 64.

(win7) Error opening the following indexes: Client (10355) A lock prevents the operation

(win7) External exception C0000006

(win XP) Access violation at address 20004339 in module 'rtl100.bpl'. Write of address 00000000

(win7 and XP) Error. Record, Hospital2, record number, 2, record state, Loaded. Error. File, Hospital.V2$. File read error. Error, 64.

(win7) Error. Record, Analyte, record number -1, record state, New. Destroying modified object.

The main issue troubleshooting is everything seems random. I can sit there have a day with them and nothing. Then get a call in half an hour about 1 or another messing up. We've replaced a network switch and a router to be certain. All permission look to be what they were on the old server (although when I got the client they had a hard drive issue and were running AviMark stored on a an external USB drive). All ends have been checked and all power saving has been turned off. Win7 made sure they were launching the shortcut in administrator mode.

Hi,

The unable to retrieve lock usually indicates an invalid setting in the registry. One thing support should be able to assist you with is downloading and running the utility program Aviregset on the server and the workstations.

The external exceptions usually occur when network connectivity drops (even momentarily.) I know you said you checked all the power management, but one piece to the power management that is sometimes overlooked is to disable the power saving on the network card. If you need assistance finding this, please let me know.

A lock prevents this operation indicates there may be read-only or hidden files within the AVImark folder. Try opening the folder on the server, selecting all files through ctrl+a, doing a right-click Properties, un-checking Read-only and Hidden, clicking Apply, and choosing to Apply changes to this folder, subfolder, and files.

The other errors can usually be resolved by doing the steps above also. If some of them persist, try to get exactly what the clinic was doing when the error occurred which will help support troubleshoot the cause.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I got the network card one, that's first setting I always turn off on the workstations when setting up a domain server.

Your mentioning of registry settings on the workstation led me to a support document on client/server. Apparently this clinic never went past the shared app install. Instructions left for me from my predecessor just has copying the AVImark icon from the server to the workstations. Needless to say I've always been perplexed as to why this size practice was using a shared app solution. I'll be giving the client/server method a go this week or next.

Fairly new install (migration from DOS) of Avimark onto Win7pro/64-bit server with Win7pro/64
"clients" (just using the normal LAN share method).

Get this error from time to time:

Error. Record, client, record number 3244, record state, loaded.
Record is deleted.

Error. File, client.v2$
File read error. Error, 64.

Is this the same issue with network adapters going to sleep for power savings, or
something else, unrelated?

When this happens, you can click "OK", but the error just comes back up. You have to
bring up Task Manager and kill the Avimark program. This is not something we want to have
the vet/vet techs doing.

If I go in and look at the specific patient records after killing Avimark, the record is
fine/present.

(I'm normally IT support for Unix/Linux and haven't spent much time with Win7.)

Thanks-

--- Cris

Chris,

The error you mention could be caused from network connectivity and power management, but it also could be an indicator that the client and patient indexes need rebuilt.

To rebuild, go to the server with the workstations closed out of AVImark, click Utilities, Rebuild Index, check Client Records and Patient Records, click Continue, and click Yes.
