Currently, we are running Avimark from a "glorified desktop" using Windows XP Pro. I've asked our IT guy to set us up with a real server, but he's looking for some information.

I've already seen Jeremy's response re: Windows Server 2008 R2 so I know his choice of OS should be okay, but he also wants to know if there is a special procedure for moving the data from the old "server" to the new, real server. (I'm pretty sure Avimark walks us through this, but please verify.)

We currently use a workgroup set up for our network, once we have the server up, should we be using a domain instead or stick with the workgroup?

Also a question about hard drive space. We are semi-paperless, but just starting to scan in all our consent forms and histories. Obviously, this will start to eat up hard drive space. The 160GB that is in the hardware requirements is for the program, but can anyone give me an idea of recommended size for the "extras" like scanned docs and rads?

Can't wait to get our old "clunky" network upgraded, but so much to sort out beforehand!

Thanks!

Megan,

We have a document for moving AVImark to a new server available at http://www.avimark.net/images/stories/documents/Recently%20updated/Instructions%20for%20Moving%20AVImark%20to%20a%20new%20Server.pdf. It goes over the things to check prior to moving servers. We do recommend that when you are ready to move your data to give us a call, so one of our technicians can help with the process.

The 160 GB hard drive recommendation should cover the extras as well. The largest backups I have seen have less than 20 GB of attachments, forms, and photos.

Domain versus workgroup is up to you and your IT staff. Both work well with AVImark.

Once you run into setting up a domain, you will want to have two DC's. Unfortunately, AVImark doesn't have a slick way of running that way. You either have to use vice versa, syncback, etc... Or try DFS but I am not sure it will work well yet as I have not tested it.

You only need a domain if you have more than ten clients contacting a host at a time or unless you have some type of a group policy which you must control centrally.
