I have been trying to solve a performance problem with after-hours troubleshooting when there is no general activity to cloud results, and now have some pretty tangible details to work with.
The starting point for this was that it was taking staff 15 minutes to run the daily reports if they did them at the front desk, but everything printed out without delay if they ran it directly from the Avimark server. But that is inconvenient for the office manager, who uses that computer at the end of the day.
Running the Income by Provider daily report on the station at the front desk as a benchmark, I find that it runs in about 1 minute 30 seconds in Standalone mode, and in about 3 minutes 50 seconds in Client-Server. Wildly unexpected.
The results are pretty close on a couple different stations. On the Avimark server itself, this report runs in about 8 seconds in Standalone, and 33 seconds in Client-Server.
Some setup notes:
All PC's are running the McAfee Internet Security Suite, but the results are little affected by disabling the firewall and/or the anti-virus.
I have the network machine names entered at Internet Options: Security tab: Local Intranet: Sites button: Advanced button: Sites.
The entire Avimark folder is shared with Full permissions.
When I first tried to set up Client-Server, starting the Avimark client generated an error: "Server version number, does not match Avimark version number, 2010.4.1.13929. Connection cannot be established." But an Avimark support rep helped me through that with the addition of a couple steps not documented in the standard instructions.
Other troubleshooting:
I tried running a station in Safe Mode with Networking, and found that Avimark won't run that way.
I also used MSCONFIG on a station to disable all Startup items and non-Microsoft services, but again, the results were virtually unaffected for Standalone. At the point I had been trying to improved the Standalone time and I failed to test Client-Server (it was late!). I could do the latter tonight if someone thinks that may bear fruit, but I'm hoping someone had and fixed the same problem and I could get where I'm going by a more direct route! |
