As far as I can tell there is no document summarizing options on this. Surprising as more and more people will be doing this.

Could I get a summary of options to do this? We want to run Avimark at home and access the server at work.

Here's what I've come up with so far.

1) VPN. I had the "joyful" task of setting up a VPN. Finally got that working, and Avimark is completely unusable. At least if I do the standard method of creating a shortcut on my home computer desktop that points at the Avimark.exe file on the server. After waiting about 5-10 minutes several times and having a bogged down computer, I gave up on that. Maybe I need to use the VPN differently/access Avimark differently?

2) Remote desktop. A less than graceful way to do it, in my opinion. This either ties up a workstation at work, or requires me to work on the server directly, which I am attempting to avoid.

Anything else I'm missing? How are people getting this done? May I suggest a Read Me document that goes over all of this? And I'm sorry if there's one I missed but searching doesn't turn anything up.

Thanks!

I use remote desktop and it works fine. But I appreciate the reasons why you want an alternative. I wonder why your VPN is slow. I was hoping to set something similar up at some point. Maybe it's something to do with the encryption hogging the CPU...? What happens if you try and run another program on the server, is that also really slow?

I will try your suggestion. All I did was to try running Avimark.exe.

How much lag when you use remote desktop? I have a cable connection and my systems are relatively new/fast.

There is a noticeable lag. It's fine for checking in occasionally, but for substantial work would be annoying. I notice the lag is much less noticeable over our work LAN (I access the server this way when at work), rather than the Internet.

You could check out a VPN forum for more help. Please let us know how you get on - I'd be really interested.

We have been using GoToMyPC for a couple of years and it works fine. It costs about
$200 a year but it is worth it for us.
