BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP Several times a week, AVImark Support assists customers in restoring their data due to hardware failures, fires, floods, theft and even clinic cats. Most of the time, the clinic has a recent AVImark back and technical support has them up and running quickly. However calls are still received from clinics who do not perform regular backups, or they are unaware their backups have failed. To ensure we, here and MSS, are able to assist you in restoring your data, we recommend to always use the built-in AVImark backup utility in additions to any other backup media source. When utilizing this internal utility it is a good idea to store your daily backups off site to keep them safely protected.
If you would like the convenience and security of an "automatic" backup service, we recommend the use of MSS Data Vault.
PASSWORDS How many of us today have a never ending list of user names and passwords written on a scratch piece of paper taped to your desk? Consider making an electronic list of all the passwords and usernames you use place them in a files and this file to a secure e-mail address or key employee in your practice. This can include passwords fro: email accounts, computer logins, internet service accounts, etc.
ININTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY Most businesses today have invested in some sort of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) attached to their most important computers. A UPS is a large battery that charges during normal use, and has enough power to keep your computer running for several minutes if the power is interrupted. This window of time gives you the ability to save what you are currently working on, before shutting down the computer. These forms of power supplies can also include the added benefit of protecting your computer from surges on the power line and protect it from brownouts.
CYBER THREATS Not only is the "current weather systems" a ghreat, but there are also human made hazards looking to disrupt your work day.
If your computer has access to the internet, it is recommended a firewall be in place. This creates a barrier or invisible wall between the computer and the cyber world. Without a firewall, online menaces are capable of utilizing security holes and create "back dorors" to your data.
If your computers are often visiting an/or downloading from the internet make certain you are scanning any downloads prior to opening or installing them. Also, up to date anti-virus software should be used to protect your computer from unnecessary pitfalls.
Your data is your livelihood, keep it secure.
